The festival runs for two months under the theme "Life" and brings together about 200 photographers from more than 30 countries with around 700 works across photography, video and installation.
"I am confident this year’s Daegu Photo Biennale will be the best yet," Daegu Arts Center director Kim Hee-chul said on Thursday.
Kim and this year's artistic director, French art historian Emmanuelle de l'Ecotais, visited the French Embassy in Seoul to outline the event's purpose and programs. De l'Ecotais has worked as a curator at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Centre Pompidou, and is the founder and artistic director of the Photo Days festival in Paris, held annually.
On this year's theme, de l'Ecotais said the exhibition looks beyond humans to include plants, animals and even forms of life that are hard to see, inviting visitors to think about how all living things depend on one another. "The artists' work asks how we should relate to the world," she said.
Alongside the main exhibition, there will be many other special programs including a symposium where domestic and overseas experts discuss how artificial intelligence is affecting photography, networking programs for photographers and book signings.
The biennale runs until Nov. 16.
